When developing our online library, Safety in Schools worked with Alberta Education to ensure that our course offerings align with curriculum outcomes for the Career and Technology Studies (CTS) learning stream.

Safety in Schools also provides enhancement courses to students in any learning stream, helping them advance their personal safety knowledge and build their resume.

Our custom developed courses have been designed and developed in house by your Safety in Schools team to provide students with a more personal look at why workplace safety is so important for them to learn and pay attention to.

Each of these courses uses case studies of real life injuries and fatalities to drive home the message that these things happen to real people.

In each case study, students look at the impact to the individual, their loved ones, their coworkers and their employers.

They also look at the chain of events leading up to each incident and where things could have been done differently to avoid the tragic outcome.

Curriculum Aligned Courses

Alberta OH&S Awareness

This three-hour course was developed by Gemini and well-known, highly respected industry professionals. Safety in Schools certificates are designed to easily and inexpensively obtain essential training that leads towards recognized certifications. University of Calgary students completing a total of 45 hours or more training will be credited 30 hours of elective course credit toward the U of C Health, Safety and Environmental Certificate program.

The Occupational Health and Safety legislation is law and all employers are legally bound to abide by its requirements. The new Bill 30 provides an improved OHS system to better protect workers and ensure they have the same rights as other Canadians. The legislation provides a framework for employers to operate their businesses and protect employees from injury, illness, and harm. The framework is quite detailed and employees need to take time to understand the mechanics of the legislation and how they can meet their responsibilities under the legislation in their work.

This course is intended to make you aware of both the employer and the employee’s responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Act, Regulation and Code and the new Act which came into force on June 1, 2018.

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Describe the responsibilities of workers, supervisors, and managers under the legislation
  • Describe the requirements for communication
  • Identify the requirements for hazard assessment and emergency response planning that are listed in the Code Recognize requirements regarding first aid and workplace violence that are listed in the Code
  • Identify and explain parts of the OH&S Code and new ACT changes relevant to employees and contractors
  • Describe the new ACT basic rights of workers

Emergency Response Planning

WHMIS 1988 – 2015 (GHS)

This 2 hour course was developed by Gemini and well-known, highly respected industry professionals. Safety in Schools certificates are designed to easily and inexpensively obtain essential training that leads towards recognized certifications. University of Calgary students completing a total of 45 hours or more training will be credited 30 hours of elective course credit toward the U of C Health, Safety and Environmental Certificate program.

WHMIS has been updated to reflect elements of an United Nations initiative called the Globally Harmonized System ofClassification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). The updated WHMIS program aligns Canada’s hazard classification and communication requirements with those used in the United Nations and other major trading partners. As many workers have completed WHMIS 1988 we have included a pretest to assess their knowledge. The content will adapt based on the test results to shorten training time if they demonstrate competency.

On completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Determine your responsibilities and the responsibilities of your Employer and your Suppliers,
  • Protect yourself from Hazardous Materials by being able to identify and interpret Supplier Labels,
  • Distinguish between the need for and use of Supplier and Workplace Labels,
  • Describe the purpose of Material Safety Data Sheets and be able to use them accordingly,
  • Identify the appropriate PPE by reading a Label or MSDS,
  • Describe the purpose of Safety Data Sheets and be able to use them accordingly, and
  • Identify the appropriate PPE by reading a Label or SDS.

Your Rights and Responsibilities at Work

The provincial and federal governments have many rules that must be followed in the Alberta workforce before you start working, while you are on the job and when you leave your employer. You will find answers to the questions about your employment responsibilities and entitlements on the job, including regulations for employment standards such as wages, termination and vacation pay, legislation on human rights and workplace health and safety, and information on privacy.

This two hour course is for workers who want to know more about employment rules in the Alberta workforce.

Safety in Schools certificates are designed to easily and inexpensively obtain essential training that leads towards recognized certification. University of Calgary students completing a total of 45 hours or more training will be credited 30 hours of elective course credit toward the U of C Health, Safety and Environmental Certificate program.

On completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Describe the major classes of PPE at the worksite and the main components of each,
  • Understand your responsibilities regarding the selection and use of PPE,
  • Identify and describe the most common PPE items that are required as part of a corporate health and safety program,
  • Describe the inspection, care, and maintenance requirements of the equipment,
  • Identify the importance of PPE,
  • Recall maintenance and implementation requirements,
  • Identify the importance of appropriate eye, ear, head, foot, and hand protection,
  • Define why appropriate PPE is imperative in a variety of situations,
  • Describe the specific uses of PPE, and
  • Define responsibilities for the use of PPE.

Respiratory Protective Equipment

This two-hour course was developed by Gemini and well-known, highly respected industry professionals. Safety in Schools certificates are designed to easily and inexpensively obtain essential training that leads towards recognized certification. University of Calgary students completing a total of 45 hours or more training will be credited 30 hours of elective course credit toward the U of C Health, Safety and Environmental Certificate program.

On completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Explain how the respiratory system works,
  • Understand the types of respiratory hazards present in the workplace,
  • Discuss the two main types of respirator and explain their selection,
  • Understand the selection, limitations of use, fitting, and care of different types of RPE,
  • Understand the legislative requirements related to the use of RPE including the importance of the related standards,
  • Describe manager, supervisor, and worker responsibilities with respect to the implementation of RPE,
  • Define SCBA and how it is used,
  • Distinguish between the effects on the upper and lower respiratory system for different hazards, and
  • Describe usage conditions for RPE.

Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG)

This three-hour course was developed by Gemini and well-known, highly respected industry professionals. Safety in Schools certificates are designed to easily and inexpensively obtain essential training that leads towards recognized certification. University of Calgary students completing a total of 45 hours or more training will be credited 30 hours of elective course credit toward the U of C Health, Safety and Environmental Certificate program.

On completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Describe the primary purpose of the Act and Regulations,
  • Define key terms,
  • Identify how goods are determined as dangerous (under the Act),
  • Define the role and responsibilities of those involved in the transport of dangerous goods,
  • Identify who is responsible for determining training and certification needs,
  • Describe the certification requirements for the transportation of dangerous goods,
  • List record keeping and documentation requirements for TDG,
  • Describe and state the purpose of different types of safety marks,
  • Describe when an Emergency Response Plan (ERP) is required,
  • Describe when the release of dangerous goods must be reported,
  • Identify the responsibilities surrounding such reports, and
  • Describe each of the Schedules included in the TDG Regulations.

Custom Safety in Schools Courses

Life Lessons – Learning the Hard Way

This 30-minute course was designed by your Safety in Schools team to give students a look into the real lives of people who have suffered workplace injuries and fatalities and their loved ones. This course introduces students to some of their basic rights and responsibilities in the workplace and then takes them through three filmed interviews by two people who suffered severe workplace injuries as young workers, as well as one father who lost his son in a preventable falling incident at an Alberta worksite.

We recommend this course as an addition to your CALM curriculum, and to any student who is about to begin working.

That’s Got to Hurt! Lessons from the Workplace

This 30-minute course is the result of a series of contests that we ran throughout 2015 and 2016. Students sent in essays and videos to us describing a workplace incident that they either witnessed or experienced and what they learned from that experience. This course is easily relatable to young workers, as it features the real-life experiences of people their own age in workplaces similar to their own.

We recommend this course as an addition to your CALM curriculum, and to any student who is about to begin working.

Heavy Machinery – It Always Wins

This 30-minute course introduces students to the dangers of working with or around heavy machinery. Students taking this course will learn about the importance of conducting a proper Job Hazard Analysis, communicating effectively with Equipment Operators, and other important things to know in order to stay safe around this kind of equipment. Students are then taken through a series of case studies of real-life incidents in which people were severely injured or killed working with Heavy Machinery. Learning from the real-life experiences of others helps students to understand that safety is not just an abstract idea or a box to tick in the morning.

We recommend this course as an addition to your safety curriculum in high school shop classes, and to any student who is interested in or about to begin any job that involves working with or near heavy machinery.

Introduction to Automotive Shop Safety

This 30-minute course introduces students to the common hazards that they will encounter working in a retail or commercial automotive repair shop, common injuries sustained in this industry, and their shared responsibility with their employer when it comes to workplace safety. Students are given examples of what a safe and responsible workplace looks like and the types of information that they should expect to be given during their training and orientation when beginning a new job at an automotive repair shop. The course utilizes a case study of a severe injury sustained by a 17 year old worker in a retail automotive shop to drive home the importance of working safely and the real-life consequences that can occur when you don’t.

We recommend this course as an addition to your safety curriculum in high school shop classes, and to any student who is interested in or about to begin any job that involves working in a retail or commercial automotive repair shop.

The Hole You Dig: Ground Disturbance Gone Wrong

This 30-minute course introduces students to the basics of safe digging, including the steps involved in requesting a locate and respecting the marks, before going on to explore the various societal impacts that occur when ground disturbance goes wrong. Students taking this course will come away with a better understanding of the facilities and utilities that are buried underground, the process to avoid damaging those facilities, and the widespread societal costs and impacts that occur when damages do happen.

Propane and Natural Gas Safety at Home

This 30-minute course teaches young people how to use, store and transport propane and natural gas safely. The course includes barbecue safety, transportation and storage, signs of carbon monoxide poisoning, the differences between propane and natural gas and more. The course also includes a look at some real-life incidents that have occurred when people did not take proper precautions.

Tragedy at the Quarry

This 50-minute course introduces students to common hazards, injuries and fatalities in the gravel crushing industry and how to mitigate those risks, with a significant focus on the importance of equipment guarding and training.

The course centres on the case study of a real-life fatality that serves as a tragic reminder of the severity of impact when something goes wrong in this kind of industry. In the course, students will see filmed interviews with the mother of a 15-year-old worker killed on an Alberta gravel crushing site as well as the owner of the company at which the fatality occurred.
