NEW: Introduction to Automotive Shop Safety

Earlier this year, we partnered up with the Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA) to design and deliver a new course focused on new workers entering the automotive industry. This course is now available to all Safety in Schools users, as well as AMTA members.

Introduction to Automotive Shop Safety provides students with an overview of the common hazards and injuries in automotive shops, what a good training and orientation program looks like in this industry, their roles and responsibilities when it comes to workplace safety, and the fundamentals of assessing and mitigating hazards. Students are walked through an emotionally impactful case study in which a 17 year old worker was severely injured when he was struck by a rim from an over-inflated tire.

The case study consists of a filmed interview with the Occupational Health & Safety Investigator who led the investigation into the case. Particular attention is paid to the various points of action/inaction that led up to the incident which, had different decisions been made, would have prevented the incident from occurring.

This course provides a good foundation for the development of practical safety skills and knowledge, and we encourage teachers to make this a part of your safety program in automotive shop / mechanics classes. Your students will finish this course with a better understanding of what they should be looking out for when they begin their first job in a retail or commercial automotive shop.

Who Should Take Introduction to Automotive Shop Safety?

Introduction to Automotive Shop Safety provides an excellent introduction to the world of automotive repair and the risks that are involved in that industry.

Teachers are encouraged to include Introduction to Automotive Shop Safety as a module in your automotive and mechanic shop courses, preferably at the beginning of a new semester before you begin more hands-on learning. We also encourage career and guidance counselors, off campus coordinators and other administrators to make this course available to any of your students who may be entering a retail or commercial automotive repair shop as part of a Work Experience or RAP program, as a part time job outside of their school commitments, or upon graduation.

How to Enroll Students

This course is hosted separately from our THRIL iLibrary courses, but the process to enroll your students is similar to what you are used to.

On your Manage Enrollments page, you will now see two tabs – “THRIL Courses” and “Safety in Schools”.

tabs
When you select “Safety in Schools” you will see a list of the users in your school with an “Enroll” button beside each student and a growing list of custom SIS courses along the top. Click on the “Enroll” button beside the student’s name and below the course name, “Introduction to Automotive Shop Safety”.

Once you have enrolled a student in the course, it will appear on their “My Courses” page along with their THRIL courses.

To reflect the addition of this new custom course and other changes, we sent out an updated User Guide to all of our teacher users in 2016, and have made it available on our website.
