We’ve Extended the Deadline!

We have decided to extend the deadline for our ongoing video, essay and social media contests to allow students a bit more time to enter!

May 31 is the new deadline for students to get their entries in for our Video and Essay contests. By participating in either contest, you can win up to $1500!

Videos don’t need to be fancy and the essays don’t need to be the next great work of literature. All you need to do is tell us about your experiences at work in the platform that you are more comfortable with. We want to know about the time (or times) you witnessed or experienced a workplace injury, fatality or near-miss. What went wrong? What could have been done better? How could it have been avoided?

These are things you should be looking for while you are at work anyways. You should always been looking for hazards and paying attention to near-misses and minor injuries, as they indicate that a problem exists which could lead to a more severe injury.

You can also share your thoughts and experiences with us using the hashtag #SISOuch for a chance to win an iPad Mini.

The stories you share with us will comprise the foundation of a new custom Safety in Schools course titled That’s Got To Hurt! Lessons From the Workplace.

Student Video Contest

Students are asked to submit a short video outlining a safety incident that they have either personally experienced or witnessed in any industry and/or daily activity in which they have taken part. In the video, students are asked to outline:

  • The details of the incident, including the nature of the incident, the actions leading up to the incident and any actions taken to contain the incident
  • The emotional, physical and financial impact(s) of the incident
  • The students personal thoughts on how the incident could have been avoided or better managed to eliminate or minimize the hazard, based on what they have learned in school, workplace training and through the Safety in Schools course(s) that they have taken
  • What lessons they learned as a result of the incident

Incidents may include near-misses, in which case students should outline one or more predictable outcomes of a similar incident occurring, what, if anything was done to eliminate or mitigate the hazard, and what could/should have been done. Videos are to be hosted on YouTube and submitted via electronic submission form.

Videos are to be 2-5 minutes in length and will be judged on three criteria, in descending order of significance:

  • Knowledge: The level of understanding exhibited by the video’s creator of the safety principals relevant to the particular incident
  • Effectiveness: How effective the video is in terms of clearly communicating the message and stimulating viewers both emotionally and visually
  • Creativity: Students are encouraged to produce unique, interesting content that effectively communicates their message and captures the student’s individuality

The Prizes!

  • 1st Place: $1500
  • 2nd Place: $1000
  • 3rd Place: $500

A panel of three judges will select three submissions by grade (12 total), based on the criteria outlined above, to be put to an open electronic vote for final selection of the winner and runners-up. Voting will be open to current Safety in Schools users as well as the public, via Facebook, Twitter and the Safety in Schools website forum. To determine the winning submission, Safety in Schools staff will tally the total number of Facebook “likes” per submission as well as the number of votes for each video on the Safety in Schools forum and received through Twitter. Information on how to vote via Twitter will be made available closer to contest close.

The winning submission and two runners-up will be included on the Safety in Schools Resource Portal and website, Facebook and Twitter and linked in an upcoming issue of the Safety in Schools newsletter. Content will also be utilized in the custom That’s Got To Hurt! Safety in Schools course. Contest will run throughout the 2015-2016 school year, closing at the end of May 2016 to allow for judging and selection of winners.

Student Essay Contest

Students are asked to submit a 1,200-1,500 word essay outlining a safety incident that they have either personally experienced or witnessed in any industry or activity in which they were engaged. In the essay, they are asked to outline:

  • The details of the incident, including the nature of the incident, the actions leading up to the incident and the actions taken to contain the incident
  • The emotional, physical and financial impact(s) of the incident
  • The students personal thoughts on how the incident could have been avoided or better managed to eliminate or minimize the hazard, based on what they have learned in school, workplace training and through the Safety in Schools course(s) that they have taken
  • What lessons they learned as a result of the incident

Incidents can include near-misses, in which case students should outline what they believe to be a predictable outcome of a similar incident occurring, what, if anything was done to eliminate or mitigate the hazard, and what could/should have been done. Submissions will be judged on three criteria, in descending order of significance:

  1. Knowledge: Understanding of the safety principals relevant to the incident
  2. Flow: How well ideas flow together to effectively communicate the message
  3. Structure/Writing: Submissions are expected to exhibit proper writing style, spelling, grammar and citations where relevant.

  • 1st Place: $1500
  • 2nd Place: $1000
  • 3rd Place: $500

The winning submission will be included in full in an upcoming issue of the Safety in Schools newsletter, as well as on the Safety in Schools blog. Social Media Contest

Throughout the school year, students are encouraged to share personal stories about workplace incidents, near-misses or other safety-related events from their own lives via Twitter and Facebook as a way of engaging young people in a two-way dialog about safety in their daily lives. By sending in their stories using the hashtag #SISOuch, we are able to consolidate these entries and pick a winner.

Through moderated dialogue these submissions will stimulate student interaction and communication focused on personal safety.

Posts that are received and contain safety related comments and observations from the workplace will be entered into a random draw to win an iPad Mini.
